It is tough to argue who is the founder of one of the largest underground art movements during the late 20th century. But it is very obvious that Shepard Fairly was one of the most impactful contributors to the Street Art culture. A culture that was inspired by New York City graffiti and other lifestyles that surrounded the graffiti movement. While most people can easily disregard the contributions of early NYC Graffiti pioneers, it would be difficult for these words to trickle out of peoples mouths "Shepard Fairly is a sell out."
A pioneer in stenciling, wheat pasting and plain ol' getting up, Shepard has become the face of Street Art. The dude that all aspiring street artist look up to, has become the staple of capitalism of Street Art culture. Graffiti legends like Iz The Wiz, Baby 168 and Pray haven't made anywhere or anything close to what Shepard is making. While I am not trying to take away his great ability to market himself as an artist. I am trying to point out that his art does not reflect his actions.
In some way we all contradict ourselves, but in Shepard's position he was able to rise to the top using anti-capitalist imagery and political propaganda. Again I am not hating on him from a business perspective, I support capitalism to the fullest. I just believe you should practice what you preach. Next time you decide to purchase that "limited edition" print think about what you are doing maybe you can purchase a real artists piece for 75% less and be just as satisfied. OBEY THE GIANT! (Shepard)
